Cơ chế: It is possible that the vascular and lymphatic systems provide the conduit to the umbilicus. Direct spread from the peritoneum is thought to be the most common route for the metastases and nodule.

Ý nghĩa lâm sàng: There are few studies on the sensitivity and specificity of this sign. However, if seen, the Sister Mary Joseph nodule has a negative prognostic value with most patients dying within a few months of diagnosis.110,111
